Understanding the differences in investment structure, global exposure, minimum investment, currency, taxation and accessibility for Indian investors.

Global investing is increasingly becoming an important consideration for Indian investors. As international businesses expand across technology, artificial intelligence, healthcare, manufacturing and other emerging industries, opportunities beyond domestic markets are attracting growing attention.

Traditionally, Indian investors have accessed overseas markets through international mutual funds offered by domestic asset management companies. However, regulatory restrictions on overseas investments have affected fresh investment opportunities in several schemes.

Against this backdrop, GIFT City is emerging as an additional gateway for accessing international markets.

But what makes GIFT City offerings different from conventional international mutual funds? How do their investment processes, minimum requirements and taxation compare? More importantly, what should investors understand before exploring these options?

1. GIFT City and International Mutual Funds: Understanding the Basic Difference

Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) houses India's International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), a specialised financial ecosystem regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA).

GIFT City-based outbound funds enable eligible Indian resident investors to access international investment opportunities through funds established within the IFSC.

On the other hand, international mutual funds are domestic mutual fund schemes regulated by SEBI that invest in overseas equities, international ETFs or other permitted foreign investment instruments.

Although both provide international market exposure, their regulatory frameworks, investment structures and transaction mechanisms are different.

2. Regulatory Framework and Investment Structure

An important distinction is that GIFT City funds operate under a separate IFSC regulatory framework and are not counted within the overseas investment limits applicable to domestic Indian mutual funds.

This creates an additional route for accessing global markets.

3. Investment Currency and Transaction Mechanism

The currency used for investment is one of the most visible differences.

International Mutual Funds: Investments and redemptions are generally undertaken in Indian Rupees. Investors can transact through domestic mutual fund platforms without independently arranging overseas remittances.

GIFT City Funds: Investments are generally made in US Dollars. Eligible resident Indian individuals can remit money under the Reserve Bank of India's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), subject to applicable conditions.

Consequently, investors need to consider foreign exchange conversion rates, banking charges and remittance-related expenses.

4. Minimum Investment and Accessibility

The investment requirements of the two routes can differ considerably.

Domestic international mutual funds may be more convenient for investors who prefer smaller investments and regular SIP contributions.

GIFT City offerings may be relevant for investors comfortable with foreign currency transactions and the minimum subscription requirements of individual funds.

5. Access to Global Markets and Investment Opportunities

Both routes can provide exposure to international markets, but the actual investment universe depends on the individual scheme's mandate.

Investors may explore opportunities across:

GIFT City funds offer an additional platform through which eligible investors can access various international strategies.

However, investors should examine the underlying holdings, geographical exposure and investment objective rather than selecting a fund simply because it offers global exposure.

6. Why Are GIFT City Offerings Gaining Attention?

Domestic mutual funds investing overseas are subject to regulatory limits on overseas investments, including the industry-wide USD 7 billion limit and the USD 1 billion limit per mutual fund house, subject to applicable regulations.

These restrictions have affected the ability of several domestic international mutual fund schemes to accept fresh subscriptions.

GIFT City funds operating under the IFSC framework are not counted within these domestic mutual fund overseas investment limits.

This provides an alternative route for investors seeking additional opportunities to diversify beyond Indian markets.

7. Understanding LRS and Overseas Remittance

The Reserve Bank of India's Liberalised Remittance Scheme permits resident individuals to remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year for permitted transactions, including eligible overseas investments.

Investments in eligible GIFT City outbound funds can utilise this facility, subject to applicable regulatory requirements.

Investors should remember that this is an overall annual remittance limit and not a separate allowance for every fund.

Another important consideration is Tax Collected at Source (TCS). Under prevailing provisions, qualifying LRS remittances exceeding ₹10 lakh in a financial year generally attract TCS at 20%, subject to applicable conditions.

TCS is ordinarily available as a tax credit and should not be confused with an additional investment expense. However, it can temporarily affect cash flow.

8. Taxation: An Important Area of Comparison

Tax treatment can influence the overall investment experience, but there is no single tax rate applicable to every international mutual fund or GIFT City fund.

For domestic international mutual funds, taxation depends on the scheme's classification and applicable provisions of the Income-tax Act. Many overseas-oriented fund-of-funds fall under specified mutual fund provisions, where gains from units acquired on or after April 1, 2023, are generally taxed at the investor's applicable income-tax slab rate.

Certain GIFT City funds, depending on their legal structure, may discharge tax at the fund level, with the tax impact reflected in the NAV.

However, this treatment is structure-specific and cannot be generalised to every IFSC fund. Investors should examine the individual fund's legal structure, tax treatment and applicable investor-level obligations.

Applicable foreign asset reporting requirements, including Schedule FA disclosures where relevant, should also be considered.

9. What Should Investors Evaluate Before Choosing?

The decision between international mutual funds and GIFT City offerings should go beyond comparing minimum investment amounts or taxation.

Investors should carefully evaluate:

10. The Bigger Picture: More Global Opportunities, More Informed Decisions

GIFT City represents an important development in India's international financial ecosystem, creating additional avenues for eligible Indian investors to access global markets.

However, it should not be viewed as a replacement for domestic international mutual funds. Both routes have distinct advantages, limitations and operating requirements.

For some investors, the convenience of rupee-based domestic mutual funds may be more suitable. Others may find GIFT City offerings relevant because of their investment structures, global exposure and available strategies.

The objective should be to understand the available routes and evaluate how international investments complement existing domestic investments.
